I could work on the leg press all day

I am thrilled when I can make it to the gym on the weekends. The mob has usually died down and there's a more relaxed feel about the place. I have come to realize that Monday is the busiest day at Planet Fitness. Each day that goes by brings fewer people in. I didn't have any big plans for my Saturday other than to get in a good workout before the family festivities on Sunday. I hadn't gone on Friday either so this was my chance to give my best effort and make the day count. I decided to skip cardio. I walked on the elliptical for a light workout, then decided to take advantage of the mostly empty circuit express area.

Users of the circuit express area are supposed to follow a certain pattern. There are 20 stations comprised of 10 weight machines and 10 steps. A light that turns green (for 60 seconds) and red (for 30 seconds) tells you how long to stay at a station and when to move and adjust. The idea is that you can complete the circuit in 30 minutes, hence the "express" portion of the area's name. If you adhere to the rules of this area, you're not supposed to sit at one machine and complete multiple sets. Nor are you supposed to skip machines. I try to be respectful of that when the area's crowded. However, on a weekend, when there aren't so many other people using the space, I'm a little lax on the rules.

Of the 10 weight machines, only three are for your legs. There is the traditional leg press, the seated hamstring curl and the knee extension. After going through the gauntlet of physical therapy when I had tendinitis, I learned how to do a few variations of exercises using only the leg press machine. Four years later I still love those exercises because I can feel them.

One variation is the common one that people use this machine for. You put both feet on the platform, about hip distance apart, squat down to an approximate 90-degree angle, and push up, using all the muscles in your legs. Most people can easily lift their entire body weight and more. A second variation is only using one leg, mimicking one-legged squats. Just like with two legs, you come all the way down and push all the way up. I am doing this one with a weight that's about 60 percent of my full body weight. The third variation is to push up from the platform with both legs but then only lower down with one leg. For this exercise, I use a weight that's about 72 percent of my body weight. You feel this one at the very bottom of your buns.

As you can tell, I'm the hog who would prefer to use this machine for multiple sets. However, I try to be respectful of other people in this are who use this machine for their circuits. On Saturday I did all of the above-mentioned exercises two times each and then I did all the upper body exercises for two times each. Each set is 60 seconds, the duration of the green light. In that time, I manage to do anywhere from 15-18 repetitions.

The amazing thing is that I was at the gym for only an hour and yet I still achieved a very satisfactory all-over body workout. That is what I consider success at the gym. By the time I was finished, it was 11:00 a.m. and I still had the rest of the day to accomplish a zillion other things! Of course friends stopped by, the sun was shining, the temperature was beautiful ... It was easy to throw down a beer in the middle of the afternoon. And after that, well, there weren't too many accomplishments on the agenda. However, it was a great day at the house with friends and dogs! Summer is in the air.

Triumph on the treadmill!

I had some personal frustrations souring my mind yesterday. When this happens I can find comfort flopping on the couch like a beached, disinterested seal or I can seek some relief in an energetic run. This is when I bank on the endorphins to kick in and make me feel better. Sure it was a record setting hot weather day in February, but I was on a one track mind for the treadmill. I found a nice spot to watch Cash Cab. I had my i-Pod fully charged and newly loaded with motivating tunes. I walked for ten minutes to warm up and then I kept on trucking. I ended up running 4.25 miles in less than an hour. I felt like a superhere. I felt like Michael Phelps, previous to bong smoking. I felt like my frustrations weren't eradicated but my mind was a lot clearer for the evaluation process. Three days in a row of exercise. Gotta love it!

The gym? on the weekend?

I actually made it to the gym this past Saturday. What a strong feeling of accomplishment! I always feel, when I get to the gym on a weekend day, that I am that much ahead of the game for the amount of workouts I can squeeze in during the entire week. *5* days of fitness for me last week. I am thrilled. Woot! Woot!

All I actually did while I was there was 15 grueling minutes on the bike, elliptical, gravitron and treadmill, respectively. And I got to catch up on some news on the cable channels ;)

Three weeks in a row!

Last night marked the third Wednesday in as many weeks that I made it to the gym for a run. I wan on the treadmill for close to an hour, and spent 30 minutes running. I'm pretty proud of sticking to my goal to run once a week and hopefully I'll be upping the amount soon enough. But, hey, slow and steady is the name of my [running] game! Tonight, I'm also thrilled to have plans to go to a Body Pump class. It's been too long. I also want to stay on target with my new (more intense) workout goal which is to complete the IWTB dvd in its entirety by my birthday. That plan calls for some serious strength so I'll definitely benefit from the muscle-toning effects of an hour of lifting weights!

The abs streak continues

Last week I carried out my plan five days in a row, then like God, I rested on the Sabbath. Not surprisingly, this got me to forget about my plan and so I skipped Monday. However, I was determined to correct for this and get back to the program. I completed my 100 on Tuesday night. Then I was back at the gym before work this morning where I completed another 100. I don't really have the $8 to spare for Body Pump this week so I figured I'd make it to the gym and give my best effort on my own. I pushed myself and sweated like a buffalo. I did squats on the Smith machine; one-legged standing squats; lunges on the balancing foam; the abductor/adductor machines; sumo squats holding weights; single, double and double-to-single leg reps on the leg press machine. I'm happy that I accomplished so much in one hour before the day had even begun. Huzzah!

Love my gym.

I have been a member of Planet Fitness for about 10 months now. I love my gym. At a monthly cost of $10 (with a $20 annual fee), the price is beyond compare. How many people find these kinds of deals on gym memberships? Hardly anyone! So because I am such a frugal nut, the price is what immediately attracted me. As far as I was concerned, they could have 4 treadmills and awful hours and I still would have been hooked. However, they have three rooms of treadmills, stair masters, ellipticals and bikes. They also have four separate areas for different weight equipment: the free weights, the 30-second routine, weight machines with adjustable plates, and weight machines that are resistance based. You can definitely find something that suits your personal tastes when you are given these kinds of choices.

Another interesting feature is their motto: the judgement free zone. From their website: "We discourage weight dropping and obnoxious grunting so you can focus on your own workout and not the person next to you." This is the non-intimidating atmosphere that makes people feel comfortable. Sure, there are some burly lads in the free weight area chest pressing the bar with car tire-size plates on each end, but it's not like you're at a Gold's Gym or a Powerhouse Gym. Those places are notorious for meathhead conventions. On the reverse side, this isn't Curves either. There truly are all types of people here. Male high schoolers breezing along at 8.0 on the treadmill. Moms in sweatpants carrying their bright pink water bottles. Dads with cassette players and bright white shoes. Your usual smattering of women with too much make-up. Overweight. Thin. Old. Really old. Pregnant. Diversity is in abundance!

Yesterday I made it to the gym for a run (*finally*). I walked for a 15 minute warm-up and ran 2.5 miles in an unhurried 30 minutes. I think I coughed enough to slightly disturb some people around me, but my lungs didn't end up on the treadmill's dashboard. I have no idea what asthma feels like, but if it's anything close to the restricted feeling of not being able to take a full, deep breath---yikes. I have new sympathy.

Well the clubs are opening at increasingly fast paces. Franchises are exploding. If you're lucky enough to find a PF new you, by all means sign yourself up!
